Bancroft is a town in Putnam County, West Virginia, United States, along the Kanawha River. The population was 389 at the 2020 census.^[2] It is part of the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area.^[5]

History

The town was named for George Bancroft, a coal mine operator. It officially became a town in 1952.^[6]

Geography

Bancroft is located at 38°30′39″N 81°50′30″W / 38.51083°N 81.84167°W / 38.51083; -81.84167 (38.510887, -81.841697).^[7]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.15 square miles (0.39 km²), of which 0.14 square miles (0.36 km²) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km²) is water.^[8]

The median age in the town was 43.8 years. 21.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.7% were from 25 to 44; 33.4% were from 45 to 64; and 15.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 50.3% male and 49.7% female.
