Charles Evans Jr. (Charles Evans Jr. is an American film producer and director. He produced Johnny Depp's directorial effort, The Brave. Charles was also a producer on Howard Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator (2004). Evans is the son of and EVAN PICONE founder and motion picture producer Charles Evans(1) and the nephew of former film studio executive and producer Robert Evans.


LIFE AND FILM CAREER

Evans was born in Manhattan NY in 1962 to Charles Evans Sr. and wife Frances Auffmordt, a documentary filmmaker. Charles had two sisters: Melissa born in 1965 and Elizabeth born in 1966. Charles attended the Allen-Stevenson School on 78th street in NYC, a private elementary school.

Charles then attended Williston Northampton, a boarding school in Easthampton, Massachusetts. After graduation, he attended University of CA, Berkley where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in “Short Story Writing”. His thesis was a collection of short stories which won Berkely University’s Eisner Prize for literature (1984).

Charles then attended USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Los Angeles, CA. Before graduating. He took time to assistant direct George Romero’s film, MONKEY SHINES.” He then graduated with an MFA in Film Production (1987). His thesis, “SECOND SON”, was a 27 minute, 35mm film that film won 12 awards including the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival’s prestigious Grand Prix. He then worked at Touchstone Pictures for two years as Director of Development for Randall Kleiser Productions before founding Acappella Pictures in March 1992.

Acappella’s first project was “NEARVE”, a documentary for Touchstone about aspiring standup comedians. He then produced Johnny Depp‘s directorial debut, “THE BRAVE“, starring Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando, an official selection for Cannes Film Festival’s 1997 competition.

For ten years Evans developed screenplays portraying the life of Howard Hughes. His enduring commitment resulted in “THE AVIATOR” (2004), which won five Oscars, three Golden Globes and four BAFTA’s.(3)

Evans wrote, produced and directed his next project, the acclaimed documentary “ADDICTION INCORPORATED.” (2012) (4)

The true story of how a research scientist turned whistleblower exposes Phillip Morris’s manipulation of Marlboros’ addictiveness and sparks the TOBACCO WARS of the 1990’s.(5)

The film won NIDA’s (National Institute on Drug Abuse’s) media award for making science understandable to the public. The World Health Organization (WHO) translated and distributed the film to its member nations to educate their people about the tobacco industry. (6) Currently this film can be viewed on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, YouTube and Fandango. (7)

Evans then directed “IMPRESSARIO” for Sergei Danillion. This 20-minute film celebrates the artistry of world-famous dancers who share experiences working for the ballet production company, ARDANI ARTISTS. The film played before a program of three Ardani sponsored ballets at City Center Theater in NYC. (2017)

CHARITABLE WORK

Charles Evans Jr. was a Trustee on the Board for the Charles Evans Sr. Foundation. The non-profit foundation provided grant awards of $60 million to a wide range of organizations in the sciences, healthcare and the arts.

Charles Evans Jr. specifically championed Musicians for World Harmony. (8) The MWH uses the healing power of music to support distressed peoples affected by war and disease. Its mission is to promote peace, understanding, and harmony through their musical efforts.

Charles also founded Luminario Ballet of Los Angeles and serves on its Board of Directors.
