History

Originally it was a Roman harbor (known in Latin as Caput Silicis, literally "At the end of Via Silicis") important for the trade with

Via Emilia. The first written document mentioning the city as the portus de capite selcis dates to 1084.[4] From 1395 to 1598 it was ruled by the House of Este, and subsequently was part of the Papal States until the unification of Italy
in 1861.
