Within, the wallsare covered with *Mosaics of the 9thcent.; from their richness this chapelwas called the Orfo del Paradiso.On the vault the Saviour holding abook with four angels ; over thealtar, the Virgin and S. John Bapt.;on the rt. wall, SS. John, Andrew,and James; on tlie 1., SS. Agnes,Pudenziana, and Prassede; over thedoor, the Throne of God, with SS.Peter and Paul; over the side door,four half-lengths, one of which (Theo-dora, mother of Paschal I.) has asquare nimbus. The bust of IMonsignore Santoni, byBernini, nearly opposite upon a pierof the nave, is said to have beenexecuted when the artist was only 10years old. On the other side of thepier is an interesting Inscription otthe time of Paschal I., relating to thetransfer of relics from the Catacomb.In the next recess is the *tomb ofCard. Alain Cetive (l-i74), with hisrecumbent statue, and reliefs of SS.Peter, Paul, Prassede, and Puden-ziana. At the end of the aisle, *Cos-matesque Tomb of Card, Anchera ofTroyes (1286). :jf IL

Bovtr 15.—S. 3Iartino. 143 Tho tribune is fiscended by a doubleflight of seven steps, composed ofroiim antico, which Napoleon I. hadordered to be sent to Paris a fewmonths before his fall. 15eautifulpavement. Under the music galleriesarc six pillars of white marble, remark-able for their foliage oroameuts. In the Confession beneath the highaltar are four sarcophagi of earlyCluistians, one of which contains theremains of SS. Prassede and Puden-ziana. Above the altar, which has avery beautiful *Co.smatesque front,is an ancient fresco of the Virginbetween the Sister Saints. Herealso is temporarily kept the SacredColumn of Egyptian granite (blotchedin large patclies of black and white)at which our Lord is said to havebeen scourged,brought from Jerusalemin 1223 by Card. Giov. Colonna. The *Mosaics are of the time of PopePaschal I. (S17~S2-i).
