DescriptionAcross Barn Pool to the Formal Gardens - geograph.org.uk - 349244.jpg
English: Across Barn Pool to the Formal Gardens Barn Pool is the little bay where in the year 997 the Vikings came ashore. Beyond the grass are the trees of the formal gardens. The stonework on the far end of the bay is the Garden Battery which was originally built in 1747 as a "saluting platform" to welcome visiting ships and was equipped with 21 guns should that number be needed for the salute. Its current shape however owes more to being rebuilt in 1863 as a proper defensive gun battery.
