Summary

Description

After a stroke paralysed William Hobson on 1 March, Willoughby Shortland (now Colonial Secretary) was tasked with gathering further signatures. Several longhand copies of te Tiriti were made, and one signed by Shortland was sent to Captain William Symonds on 13 March 1840 (the Manukau-Kāwhia Sheet: www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195236645). His job was to gather signatures in Manukau and adjacent areas on the west coast.

Symonds, who was an unattached British army officer, had earlier been at Waitematā. With the aid of CMS missionary James Hamlin, Symonds organised a hui in Manukau Harbour – possibly at Orua Bay. Hamlin explained the Treaty, but opposition to it was strong (including that of Rewa, who having reluctantly signed at Waitangi had withdrawn his support), and no rangatira signed.

On 3 April Symonds left Manukau Harbour for Waikato Heads.

Above is a marine chart of Manukau Harbour, surveyed in 1853 by the British Admiralty. The ‘Old Church and Mission Station’ at Orua Bay is located on the southern part of the harbour entrance (near Orua Stream). Surveyed by Commr. B. Drury; Messrs. H. Kerr and P. Oke, Second Masters; A. Farmer and C. Stanley, Masters Assistants; and W. Blackney 1853.
