As the fituation of this Fortrefs rendered it a key to the northern partof the Kingdom of Scotland, the lieges and revolutions it hath undergone,have afforded much matter for hiftory, a detail of which, in fo fmall acompafs as we are obliged to confine ourfelves, would amount only toa dry chronological catalogue of unconnected faclis ; we mall endeavourtherefore to fill up the ufual number of pages with a very few remarkableoccurrences tranfaded near the walls of this celebrated Caftle, or whichhave palled within it as a Palace, after the acceflion of the Stuart Familyto the Throne, from the different Princes of which houfe, (as hath beenobferved in a foregoing number) it received its prefent form.
