Anubis mask made from cartonnage
Description
Rear three-quarter view from the right of cartonnage mask depicting the jackal headed god, Anubis. Painted surface, with blue/black and white lines decorating the head-dress. Raised vertical ears, and long nose.Used by priests during mummification rituals. Fragmentary, but all pieces present. The only cartonnage Anubis Mask in existence and one of only two Anubis masks existant - the other a ceramic mask is in Hildesheim, Germany. Mask likely to be worn by a male priest playing the part of Anubis in a temple during mummification or burial ritual. Probably buried with the priest who had worn it in life.
