Description
English: Statue of the emperor Augustus (29BC - AD 14). Bronze. Found in the Aegean sea between the islands of Euboea and Agios Efstratios. The emperor is depicted in mature age, mounting a horse. He wears a tunica decorated with a meander pattern. Iconographic features of the Prima Porta gesture of official greeting. The hilt of his sword can be seen below the left hand, in which he held the horse's reigns. On the bezel of his finger-ring a staff of divination (lituus) is engraved, symbolizing the supreme religious office of Pontifex Maximus, assumed by Augustus in 12 BC. 12-10 BC
Ελληνικά: Άγαλμα του αυτοκράτορα Οκταβιανού Αυγούστου (29 π.Χ. - 14 μ.Χ.). Χαλκός. Βρέθηκε στο Αιγαίο, μεταξύ των νησιών Εύβοιας και Αγίου Ευστρατίου. Ο αυτοκράτορας απεικονίζεται έφιππος, σε προχωρημένη ηλικία. Φορεί χιτώνα (tunica) με κατακόρυφη πορφυρή ταινία (clavus purpurea) και χλαμύδα (palydamntum). με κροσσωτή απόληξη και διακόσμηση με μαίανδρο. Συνδυάζει εικονογραφικά στοιχεία των τύπων Prima Porta και Ακτίου. Το δεξί χέρι υψώνεται σε χειρονομία επίσημου χαιρετισμού. Κάτω από το αριστερό, με το οποίο κρατούσε τα ηνία του αλόγου, διακρίνεται η λαβή ξίφους. Στη σφενδόνη του δαχτυλιδίου του διακρίνεται αγχάρακτο το ραβδί οιωνισκόπου (lituus), σύμβολο του αξιώματος του Pontifex Maximus, ανώτατης ιερατικής εξουσίας την οποία ο Αύγουστος έλαβε το 12 π.Χ. 12-10 π.Χ.
Français : Statue de l'empereur Auguste (29BC - 14AD). Bronze. Trouvée dans la mer Egée, entre les îles d'Eubée et d'Agios Efstratios. L'empereur est dépeint d'âge mur, à cheval. Il porte une tunique décorée d'un motif de méandres. Il adopte la pose du salut officiel. Une poignée d'épée est visible sous sa main gauche, dans laquelle il tient les rênes de son cheval. Autour de son doigt il y a un anneau de divination (lituus) gravé , symbolisant l'office religieux suprême de Pontifex Maximus , assumé par Auguste en 12 av.
