h deer forests it is nowpreserved and encouraged because it keepsdown the number of mountain or blue hares.When these animals become too numerousthey make deer-stalking very difficult, byrunning about upon being disturbed by thesportsman, and thus giving warning of dangerto the ever alert stags. The Golden Eagle breeds on ledges incliffs and occasionally in trees, and is verypartial to an old haunt. The eyrie, as thenest is called, is built of sticks, pieces ofheather, moss, fern-fronds, grass and occa-sionally wool. Old eyries are repaired everyspring until they become very bulky. Thewriter has seen one that would have filled thebody of an ordinary cart. Two, and sometimes three, eggs are laid;these are dull white, clouded, blotched, andspotted nearly all over with rusty brown. Young Eagles grow slowly, and when theyhave fledged and been taught how to catchtheir prey, are driven away by their parents,because too many birds of this species couldnot find food in the same neighbourhood.

The Common Coot THIS bird may not inaptly be describedas an enlarged edition of the moorhen.Quite apart, however, from this difference insize it can be readily distinguished by thefact that the bare patch or shield on itsforehead is pure white, whereas that onthe forehead of its relative is red. We fre-quently hear this species referred to as theBald-headed Coot in consequence of theabove-mentioned peculiarity. The Common Coot frequents lakes, meres,reservoirs, and sluggish rivers, and does nottake up its abode, as a rule, upon such smallponds and streams as the moorhen. It is found breeding in nearly all suit-able places throughout the British Islands,migrating during the winter from its frozenhaunts to such places as Poole Harbourand Hickling Broad.
