English: Multiple discrete gouge zones of unknown shear sense cutting crystalline basement rocks within the Painted Canyon, Mecca Hills, California, USA. The local basement geology is complex and records both recent transpressional deformation associated with movement along the San Andreas fault but also earlier deformation associated with subduction along the North American margin. The origin of these gouge zones is unknown, but tentatively inferred to record later deformation associated with transpression along the San Andreas.
