The EngineerCorps is Western Electrics installa-tion men, now only a company ofabout 200. But these are mobiletroops and early in 1942, at thepeak of their campaign of switch-board and PBX installation. Westernhad two battalions—900 men on thefiring line. The SOS, WesternsWashington distributing house, ac-counts for another company of about175 which, at the height of the battleof wartime expansion, now past its ^° 571 employees of the C. & P. TelephoneCompanies in the Washington area were inmilitary service at the beginning of 1943. ^^ 9)Ji33 employees engaged in 3 years by theC. & P. Ingenious time-saver: tin can andstring convey toll tickets from a tolloffice to temporary toll positions twofloors above via holes drilled throughthe floors. Three days before thispicture was taken, the authors deskstood on this spot area. A. T. & T. and Long Lines,the Signal Company of the garrison,musters at present about 200 people,where a detachment of 85, at the firstof 1940, was quite adequate. The bombs that fell on Oahu senttroops quite unexpectedly and hur-riedly to many places. They like-wise brought to Washington a bandof volunteers, summoned from statesas far away as Minnesota, to taketheir temporary places at switch-boards and with installation crewshard-pressed to carry the load. Onehundred and seventy-five of themwere on the job a fortnight after De-cember 7 and, in all, 600 experi-enced long distance operators, crafts-men, engineers, commercial repre-sentatives and others from 15 BellCompanies have seen or are now see-ing service on the Capital Front.
