It is not the purpose of this storyto deal primarily with errors, but sincethe accuracy of the bills and thepromptness with which they are ren-dered are the two most importantbases for measuring the character ofthe job performed by all departments,in so far as their activities are re-flected on the bills, it is helpful toknow at the outset what sort of re-sult is achieved. Customers are mainly interested inreceiving accurate bills. Probably notso many are particularly interested inreceiving bills promptly. To the company,the principal advantage is that regu-larity in the delivery of bills to cus-tomers results in regularity in the pat-tern of payments, so that the receiptsand disbursements of cash can be co-ordinated to fit the pattern, therebypermitting an efficient management offunds.
