Extremely symbolic view on the history of controlled biomineralization: The shell of the „living fossil“ Nautilus forms under the influence of biological rhythms, symbolized here by the moon and the logarithmic spiral. The molecular link between biological and mineralogical control mechanisms is provided by proteins with distinct functions such as cyclic adsorption and desorption on mineral surfaces. Under laboratory conditions, some of them form highly ordered arrays on atomically flat mica on the length scale of 1/1000 to 1/100.000 mm. The colored patches represent an artificial extraction from real nano-scale atomic force microscopy data. Such proteins could have severe impact on cyclic mineral precipitation and dissolution, therefore determining the growth and form of biominerals. Artwork created by me -- Imwe | Talk
