Summary

Description
English: As seen in May 2020: it's just a lowly prepaid cell phone store now, but the building at 1067 Broadway (corner Sears Street) in Buffalo, New York has quite a past. It started out as the Polonia Hotel, erected in 1906 by architect Władysław Zawadzki for hotelier Stanislaus Dengel, but Zawadzki's original design - in his trademark corner-towered, mansard-roofed, vaguely French Renaissance aesthetic - was almost completely obliterated in 1919, when it was remodeled by the firm of Lewis & Hill to serve as headquarters of the Broadway National Bank, which merged with the Buffalo Trust Company three years later. Lewis & Hill's aesthetic hews to the Neoclassical style typical of bank buildings of the era, with circular relief sculptures of griffins and eagles adorning the façade between the first and second floors pointing the way toward the Art Deco of the future, and a frieze crowning the second floor with the name of the bank inscribed at the center of the façade and a dentil course above. Buffalo Trust Company was, in turn, bought out by Marine Trust Company, who still operated a branch at 1067 Broadway as of 1934. The building served as a Goodwill thrift store from 1954 through 1981.
