   1348 (4) *Sir John de Grailly (Founder). Captal. de Buch.
   1377 (62) Henry (Plantagenet),styled "of Bolingbroke, " Earl of Derby. Afterwards Duke of Lancaster. Subsequently Henry IV, King of England.
   [c.1399] (92) *Sir Philip de la Vache. Transferred to this stall from Stall 2 (N.i) in 1399. The plate remains in this stall.
   1408 (114) *Gilbert, 5th Lord Talbot.
   1419 (133) John (Grey) Earl of Tankerville. Distinguished in the French wars. His plate was still in this stall when Hope published his Stall-Plates, but it has since disappeared.
   1421 (138) *John (de Mowbray), Earl Marshal. Afterwards 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
   1433 (148) Richard (Plantagenet), 3rd Duke of York. Grandson of Edmund of Langley. Protector of England. Killed at the battle of Wakefield.
   c.1461 (181) Richard (Nevill), 1st Earl of Warwick. Famous in the Wars of the Roses as the "Kingmaker." Killed at the battle of Barnet.
   c.1468 (201) *Charles, Duke of Burgundy, known as Charles "the Bold." His stall-plate was moved in 1937 to the adjacent screenpanel.
   [c.1472] (208) *John (de la Pole), 2nd Duke of Suffolk. Transferred to this stall from Stall 14 (N.13).
   [1463] (192) Ferdinand I, King of Sicily and Naples. Transferred to this stall from Stall 6 (N.5).
   C.495 (246) *Henry (Tudor), Duke of York. Afterwards Henry VIII, King of England.


Stall "South 5" (Old Stall 5)

  • 1348 (Knight number 4) Sir John de Grailly, Vicomte de Benanges et Castillon. Captal (i.e. Governor) de Buch. w:Jean III de Grailly (d. 7 September 1376, Paris), Captal de Buch, KG, was a Gascon nobleman and a military leader in the Hundred Years' War, who was praised by the chronicler Jean Froissart as an ideal of chivalry. One of the Founders of the Order. Fought under the Black Prince at Poictiers.
  • c.1399 (92) Sir w:Philip de la Vache KG (c. 1348 – 1408) Served in the French wars.
  • c.1408 (elected) (114) w:Gilbert Talbot, 5th Baron Talbot, 8th Baron Strange of Blackmere, KG (1383 – 19 October 1418) of Blakemere , Whitchurch, Shropshire. Afterwards Lord Strange of Blackmere. Defeated the insurgent Welsh in 1407. Served in the French wars. Captain General of the Marches in Normandy.
  • 1421 (elected) (138) John (de Mowbray), Earl Marshal; afterwards 3rd Duke of Norfolk. (w:John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, KG, Earl Marshal (12 September 1415 – 6 November 1461)) He served in the French wars, but was absent from Agincourt through sickness.
  • Royal arms quartering Mortimer may be for w:Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York (1411 –1460) (installed 1433 (Knight no.148) Richard (Plantagenet), 3rd Duke of York. Grandson of Edmund of Langley. Protector of England. Killed at the battle of Wakefield), son of Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge (second son of Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York), by his wife Anne de Mortimer, the eldest of the four children of Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March.
  • c.1472el (208) John (de la Pole), 2nd Duke of Suffolk. Married Elizabeth, sister of Edward IV. A staunch Yorkist.
  • c.1495 (246) Henry (Tudor), Duke of York. Created PRINCE OF WALES in 1502 on the death of his brother Arthur. Afterwards HENRY VIII, King of England.
  • 1535 (297) James V, King of Scotland. Father of Mary, Queen of Scots and nephew of Henry VIII.
  • 1555 (333) Emanuel Philibert, 10th Duke of Saxony.
  • 1582 (364) Frederick II, King of Denmark.
  • 1582 (365) John Casimir, Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria.
  • 1605 (399) Ulric, Prince of Norway and Denmark, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein.
  • 1628 (425) Henry Frederick de Nassau, 10th Prince of Orange. Grandfather of William III, King of England.
  • 1633 (432) Prince Charles Ludovic, Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of Bavaria. Son of Frederick, King of Bohemia and the Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I.
  • 1645 (440) Prince Rupert, Count Palatine of the Rhine. Duke of Bavaria. Supporter of Charles I in the Civil War. Brother of the above. Elected 1642; installation dispensed with at Oxford 1645.
  • 1673 (478) Charles (Palmer, afterwards Fitzroy) Earl of Southampton. Afterwards Duke of Southampton. Son of Charles II and Barbara, Duchess of Cleveland.
  • 1684 (488) Charles (Seymour) 6th Duke of Somerset. Supporter of the Prince of Orange, and contributed largely to the undisputed succession of the House of Hanover.
  • 1762 (580) William Henry, Prince of Brunswick-Luneburg. Afterwards Duke of Gloucester. 3rd son of Frederick Prince of Wales, and brother of George ill.
  • 1855 (713) Napoleon III, Emperor of the French.
