Summary

Description This non-native crayfish thrives in the waters of the Santa Monica Mountains, eating the eggs, tadpoles, and even adult frogs and newts. A noticeable decrease in amphibians has been attributed to crayfish predation. Crayfish were most likely introduced to the Santa Monica Mountains because of their utilization as fishing bait. Volunteer events are held throughout the mountains to remove these crustaceans.
