Description Fair Oaks, Va. Lt. James B. Washington, a Confederate prisoner, with Capt. George A. Custer of the 5th Cavalry, U.S.A. Note: Union army officer George Armstrong Custer, right, encountered numerous West Point classmates fighting for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Here he is shown with captured Confederate Lt. James B. Washington just days after Custer found another classmate, Capt. John Willis Lea, among the wounded following the Battle of Williamsburg, The Library of Congress
