| Description |
English: Photo of ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth. The entire region is ionized by the massive star nearby (HD 206267), except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star's ultraviolet rays. The combined action of the light from the massive star ionizing and compressing the rim of the cloud, and the wind from the young stars shifting gas from the center outward lead to very high compression in the Elephant's Trunk Nebula. This pressure has triggered the current generation of protostars.
Subframes for the photo was taken from Estonia. Stacked image is post-processed in so called HOO palette, where different wavelenghts has been assined different colors. Photo processing technique know as drizzle (2x) has been used to increase the resolution of the original image. Technical details:
Eesti: Elevandi Londi udukogu asub meist umbes 2400 valgusaasta kaugusel ning koosneb suurest ligi sadakond valgusaastat laiast gaasi- ja tolmupilvest, mis on täis ohtralt pisemaid tähetekke piirkondi. Terve udu paneb helendama udukogu keskel asuv sinine ülihiidtäht (tegelikult kolmiktäht) tähisega HD 206267, mille tähetuule kiiruseks on mõõdetud rekordilised 3225 kilomeetrit sekundis. Fotol udu vasakus servas iseloomulikus ringikujulises halos paistab täht nimega Mu Cephei või Hercheli Garneti täht. Tegemist on punase hüperhiiuga, mille mõõtmeid Päikesesüsteemis võib võrrelda Saturni orbiidi ulatusega. Päikese heledust ületab see 38 000 korda. Nii nagu Orioni tähtkujus asuv Betelgeus on ka Garnet jõudnud oma elu viimasesse etappi ning plahvatab kosmilises ajaskaalas varsti supernoovana. Kuigi udukogu heledus on kaugel silmaga nähtavusest (isegi teleskoobiga märkamiseks läheb vaja üsna kogukat tehnikat) mahuks taevas vaadates selle sisse mitu täiskuu ketast.
Foto jaoks vajalikud kaadrid on tehtud Eestist Tõrva linna taevast ning foto on töödeldud võltsvärvidesse (HOO). Foto resolutsiooni on suurendatud läbi nii-nimetatud drizzle (2x) tehnika. Kasutatud tehnika:
