Summary

Description

A U.S. Navy Grumman F9F-2 Panther floating on water after crashing over the bow of the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) near Korea on 7 August 1950. CDR R. Weymouth, CO of fighter squadron VF-112 Fighting Twelve, stands on nose of plane awaiting rescue. VF-112 was assigned to Carrier Air Group 11 (CVG-11) for a deployment to Korea from 5 July 1950 to 26 March 1951.

CDR Ralph Weymouth went on to be Captain of the Essex Class carrier USS Lake Champlain CVS-39 in 1961 and he was in command when that ship recovered Alan B. Shepard, Jr. on May 5, 1961, which was the first U. S. manned space flight. Captain Weymouth rose to be Vice-Admiral of the U. S. Navy.
