First Unitarian Society of Denver 1400 Lafayette Street, Denver National Register 7/14/2017, 5DV.16713 "The First Unitarian Society of Denver (FUSD) was the location of Colorado’s first religious ceremony for a same-sex wedding, held in 1975 following issuance of a marriage license and civil ceremony in Boulder County. Since the relocation of FUSD here in 1958, the building has played a central role in civil rights issues pertaining to the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ), African-American, immigrant, and numerous other communities seeking to engage in causes related to social and racial justice. Constructed in two phases from 1893-99 for the Plymouth Congregational Church, the First Unitarian Society of Denver building is also a fine example of the Romanesque Revival style as designed by architects Balcomb & Rice and Varian & Sterner"—Description from the History Colorado website. |
