The Great Flood of 1771 (marker just below the hanging basket) occurred on November 17 after torrential rainfall. All the bridges in the Tyne Valley, including Newcastle's medieval Tyne Bridge, were destroyed, except for the bridge at Corbridge <a title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyne_Bridge" rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyne_Bridge">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/>

Although better known for his paintings of cats, Alnwick artist, Wilson Hepple (1854-1937) illustrated this event in his dramatic painting, 'After the Flood" (c.1900) <a title="http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/discovery/thingstoseeanddo/exhibition/2010/06/12/building-bridges/image/2/" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/discovery/thingstoseeanddo/exhibition/2010/06/12/building-bridges/image/2/">Link</a><img style="padding-left:2px;" alt="External link" title="External link - shift click to open in new window" src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/img/external.png" width="10" height="10"/>
