Text Appearing Before Image:
a loftyand persistent mountain mass, its crest in many places being morethan 10,000 feet above sea level, or about a mile above the alkali flatof the upper valley. Arc Dome, the highest peak, rises 11,775 feetabove sea level, or more than 6,300 feet above the flat; Bunker HiUPeak, a conspicuous mountain farther north, rises 11,477 feet abovesea level. The crest of the range is in general near the east edge, butnear Bunker Hill Peak and Arc Dome the mountain areas drainingeastward widen to about 7 miles, and farther south, where PeavineCreek heads, it is still wider. The steep east face of the range isrugged and is cut by deep precipitous walled canyons, but fartherback the mountains, although having great relief, appear notably lessrugged and more undulating (Pis. Ill and IV). Pine trees, largeenough to be sawed into lumber, formerly grew on the mountains, but the timber now consists chiefly of a sparse growth of pinon, juniper, and mountain mahogany, with birch and wiUow in thecanyons.
