Summary

Description

The place appears to be banal and not spectacular, but to me, it is probably the most impressive I saw in Iran. Shush, Acropolis Teppeh, Archeological tranch left by French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan and later re-excavated by Roland de Mecquenem. That tranch now left abandoned is a tremendous open book on history of civilization. The different still visible levels (for those who know) resume 5 to 6000 years of history and even proto-history. From the upper islamic levels, through the Sasanian, Parthian, Seleucid, Achaemenian, we come to the Elamite levels. Defined by the different types of Potteries found, these levels let appear thousands of fragments of ceramics. Passing the neo and medio Elamit levels, featuring the invention of writing with the first cuneiform clay tablets preceded by clay counting and inventory devices, we arrive to the old Elamite levels and see ground zero, the downstairs level. the cercle of grass and mud you see, are the remnants of a chimney, belonging to an appartement. Some parts of the place were left intact (see backward) to testify how deep was that tranch and mark the former levels.

Shush, Khuzestan province, Iran, April 2007.
