William Green Gallaher, a Presbyterian min-ister, came to Illinois from Tennessee about 1830. Both grandfathers havingalways opposed slavery showed their political principles by prominent connectionwith the Underground Railway. The father. William Russel. one of the oldestand most esteemed citizens of Jacksonville, has. with his sons,—lived up to thereligious and political principles of the family, being both a Presbyterian and aRepublican. The subject of this sketch has been a member of the County Central Com-mittee several times : Chairman of the City Central Committee: was candidatefor Circuit Clerk in 1888. being defeated by a majority of twenty-three in astrongly Democratic County: and is the present candidate for State Senator fromthe Thirty-fourth District. In 1891 Andrew Russel was married to Clara, daughter of Rufus PutmanRobbins of Cairo. Illinois. They with their five children reside at present inJacksonville. For cleanness of life and sterling integrity, both socially and polit-ically. Andrew Russel has never been questioned. WILLIAM RUSSEL. William Russel of Jacksonville, Illinois, is a native of Scotland. He wasborn in the year 1823 at Whiteclough. in the parish of Crawford-John. He isone of the two surviving sons of the late Dr. Andrew Russel and Agnes ScottRussel.
