At the time of his death his father was residing at Howden Dyke, Howden, Yorks. Died of wounds in No1 South African General Hospital, Abbeville, France 26 August 1916. A war gratuity granted 04 January 1917 to his sister Doris, revised 20 September 1919 aged 25. At rest in Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France

John William Andrew. Corporal 25680. 1st Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Born 1895 to John and Georgina Andrew. 1901 - 1911 with his parents and siblings at 4, Welbourne Terrace, Hornsea, Yorks. Awarded the Croix de Guerre (Belgium). London Gazette dated 09 July 1918 Died 20 March 1918. A war gratuity granted 22 June 1918 to his father, revised 01 December 1919. At rest in Minty Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

Thomas Barr. Private G/8567, 6th The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) Son of William Kemplay and Sarah Barr, of Eastgate, Hornsea, Yorkshire. Killed in action 07 October 1916 aged 31. A war joint gratuity was granted to his siblings 16 February 1918. His brother Henry was revised 03 April 1918. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

George Ernest Binning. Private 12/442, 12th East Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Esther Binning, of 37, Southgate, Hornsea, Hull. Born at Atwick, Hull. Died of wounds 05 May 1917 aged 25 years. A war gratuity was granted 28 February 1918 to his mother. His brother Christopher was granted a war gratuity 24 December 1919. At rest in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Frank Hansome Blackburn. Lance Corporal, 200280 1/5th West Yorkshire He was gassed at the front, from an exploding gas shell 22 July 1917. Treated at No 7 General Hospita., St Omer, France. Invalided to England 13 August 1917 on Hospital Ship St Andrew and admitted into Royal Victoria Military Hospital Netley, Hampshire the following day. He was discharged 29th September 1917 into an Auxiliary Hospital, (location not recorded) He was re-admitted into R.V.M.H. Netley 29 September 1917. He died at 12-15 am of Cardiac Syncope in Royal Victoria Military Hospital Netley 05 December 1918. (The hospital information from his service record) A war gratuity was granted was granted to his widow Alice Jane 27 March 1919. At rest in York Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Harold Blanchard. Driver 755521, C Battery, Royal Field Artillery, 223rd Brigade. Born 1891 at North Cave, Yorkshire. Died of wounds in 49 Casuality Clearing Station, France 13 May 1918 aged 27. A war gratuity was granted 02 January 1919 to his uncle John, revised 09 December 1919. At rest in St Riquire British Cemetery, France.

Son of R H and Eleanor Cannell, of 9, Clifford Street, Hornsea, Yorks, Killed in action 10 September 1918 aged 27. A joint war gratuity was granted 13 April 1920 to his mother and brother, Roland S. William Holmes Collinson. 2nd Lieutenant, 6th (Territorial) Northumberland Fusiliers. Born 1890 at Enfield Middlesex to William Rowley Field, and Sarah Collinson 1901-1911 residing with his widowed grandmother Harriet Ann Collinson at 05 The Knoll, Beckenham, Kent. 1911, occupation Printer's Representative. William Holmes Collinson of Hornsea Yorkshire, 2nd Lieutenant H.M.Army died 05 January 1916 at or near Ypres, Belgium. His effects went to his father William Rowley Field Collinson, insurance manager.

George William Cooper. Private 24690, 1st East Yorkshire Regiment. Born 1881 to James William and Ann Elizabeth Cooper 1911 with his wife Mary who he married in 1901 at No 1 Bank Street, Hornsea. Killed in action 04 October 1917. A war gratuity granted to his widow Mary Jane, nee Chapman 01 October 1918 revised 02 January 1920 Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Leonard Frankish. Private 32412 Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 25781 same regiment. His records he was transferred on the 18 June 1916 Private 27181, 13th South Staffordshire Regiment and while in France attached to the Army Service Corps, Labour Corps. Born 1881 to Thomas and Betsey Jane Frankish. 1881 aged 10 months residing with his parents and siblings at Skipsea, Yorkshire. The 07 August 1915 he married Helena at Hull Registry Office. Medically discharged from the army 07 September 1916, and was admitted to the East Riding Asylum A war gratuity was granted 14 October 1919 to his widow, Helena. He died 1918 aged 37

Claude Stanley Fullam. Apprentice Marcantile Marine, on cargo ship S.S. Okement (Sunderland) which was carrying coal and general cargo. Son of Alfred and Mary Ann Fullam, of The Elms, Hornsea, Yorkshire. Drowned as a result of the sinking of his ship by U-Boat 64, 140 Miles of Malta 17 February 1917 aged 17. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

Richard Arthur Grantham. Private 38369, 8th East Yorkshire Regiment. Born 1877 to George and Sarah Ann Grantham of Hornsea. 1899 he married Elizabeth Jane Leighton at Beverley, East Riding, Yorkshire. 1901 with his wife and daughter, Mabel at Mere Side, Hornsea, occupation bricklayer. 1911 with his wife and children at Back of Westgate, Hornsea. She later remarried in 1924 to Thomas M Vessey. Died 28 November 1917 age 42 years. A war gratuity was granted 31 January 1918 to his widow, revised 06 November 1919. Hugh Cecil Grummitt. 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Reserve Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment Born 1899 to Hugh Joseph and Bertha Grummitt and brother of Joseph Roland who also fell. 1901 with his parents and siblings at 02 Grosvenor Terrace, Hornsea. 1911 with his parents and his sisters at Elim Lodge, Hornsea Died of broncho pneumonia 25 March 1919 aged 20. At rest in Hornsea Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Joseph Roland Grummitt. Lieutenant, East Yorkshire Regiment. Born 1894 in Hull to Hugh Joseph and Bertha Grummitt and brother of Hugh Cecil who also fell. 1901 with his parents and siblings at 02 Grosvenor Terrace, Hornsea. At some stage between 1901 and 1914 he went to Canada and joined up. He enlisted 03 November 1914 and posted to 23rd Battalion Canadian Infantry as Private 63394. Posted to Shorncliffe with 23rd Bn, later posted to 15th Canadian Infantry in France 02 May 1915. He was transferred to the 23rd Bn in Folkstone on appointment to Commission. He was discharge to commission to the 4th Reserve, East Yorkshire Regiment at Catterick, 24 October 1916. Died 14 November 1918 aged 24. At rest in Hornsea Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Hugh Stewart McDowall, RAF, was flying over the district, his machine got out of control, and in falling crashed into one of the buildings of a local gunpowder factory. Both building and machine were wrecked, and the young officer was taken from the debris dead, his terrible injuries including broken back, legs and arms. Fortunately, the petrol did not ignite, or the consequences might have been much more disastrous, as a large number of hands were working in the vicinity at the time”.

Arthur Pooley. Private 25660, 12th East Yorkshire Regiment. Born 1894 at Hornsea to Jane Marlow Tooley, spinster. 1901 boarding along with Laura and Frank at the home of widower William Pooley and his children at Southgate, Hornsea. I wonder why no relation was given to Arthur and his two siblings. 1911 he and his two siblings now called grandchildren were still residing with William, and his daughter Jane Marlow aged 38 at 34 Southgate Hornsea. In his service records there is a letter from her to the Regimental paymaster stating that she is not Mrs, but Miss Pooley 1915 he married Cecelia Agnes Sutton in the registration district of Skirlaugh, East Riding, Yorkshire. His wife died February 1916. The 03 May 1917 he was taken Prisoner of War by the German and was interred at Limberg, Germany. He was repatriated to England on S.S. La. Cour but died from pneumonia following influenza at 31 December 1918. A war gratuity granted 26 June 1919 to his daughter Cecilia A, born 07 February 1916. B Smith. The following might be him. On ancestry I found a Bernard Smith, who was the son of William Alfred and Sarah Jane Smith of 03 Mary’s Place Hull. Private 11106, 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment who enlisted at Beverley, Yorks 31 August 1914 aged 21 who only served 40 days with the regiment. He was discharged from the army 12 October 1914 after being convicted by a civil power and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment. A family tree on Ancestry has a death date this soldier as being 29 April 1916. I have been unable to confirm this date

Charles John Robert Cockett. Galley Boy, 161891 Merchant Navy on S.S. Ardanbhan (Glasgow). Son of Charles George James Cockett and Alice Cockett, of 01 Back Terrace, Hornsea Bridge, Hornsea, Yorkshire. The ship was first attacked by torpedoes from U-38 which only damaged it. It was sunk thirteen hours later by the Italian submarine, called Enrico Tazzoli, 27 December 1940. There were no suvivors, he was aged 17. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

Frank Gordon Walker. Sergeant 1019154, Royal Air Force VR attached to 103 Squadron RAF. Born 1911 to Frank and Annie A Walker, of Hornsea, Yorkshire. He was part crew of six in a Wellington Ic R1397 which took off at 2340 hrs on the 24th from RAF Elsham Wolds, Linconshire and failed to return on the 25 July 1941 from operations over Emden, Germany. He was aged 30. At rest in Leeuwarden Northern General Cemetery, Netherlands,

John William Webb. Private 4612878, 2nd Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding). Son of James and Gertrude Mary Webb, of Hornsea, Yorkshire. Died 16 October 1940 aged 29. At rest in Delhi War Cemetery, India.

Dennis Wetherell. Sergeant 953203, Royal Air Force VR attached to 467 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. Son of Doris Keeley, of West Acton, Middlesex. He was part crew of seven in a Lancaster III ED547 of 467 Squadron which took off from RAF Waddington on bombing mission over Berlin 29 December 1943 and failed to return, presumed crew al killed, he was aged 23 In the service records of Pilot Officer Bruce Alexander Tait, of the Royal Australian Air Force is a report compiled by the department from the Missing Research and Enquiry operating in Germany. The report is based on investigations, inspection of enemy records and interrogations of local residence states the aircraft exploded, presumably as the result on enemy action of the town of Gross Ziethen at approximately 8 pm on the 29th. Gross Ziethen is situated about 8 miles S.W. of Berlin. Another report shows that there were no survivors. All at rest in Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany, formerly West Berlin.

Cyril Wilkinson. Ordinary Seaman P/JX296899, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Nigeria. Born 06 September 1922 to George Edward and Hilda Wilkinson, of Hornsea, Yorkshire. Died at sea 12 August 1942 aged 19. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

Kenneth Wilkinson. Lieutenant Colonel 39999, East Yorkshire Regiment, commanding 1st Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment. Born 1908 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Walter John and Mary Ethel Wilkinson. Husband of Rosemary Farrer Wilkinson, of Hollingbourne, Kent Died 15 December 1943 aged 36. At rest in Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy.

Henry Spencer Williams. Lieutenant 219620, of 143 Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. Son of John Percy Spencer Williams and Beatrice Williams; husband of Rubie Mabel Williams, of Hull. Died 06 February 1945 aged 26. At rest in Oostende New Communal Cemetery, Belgium Wills and Admin, Ancestry. Henry Spencer Williams of 76 Faraday Street, Kingston upon Hull died on 06 February 1945. His effects went to his widow.

Gordon Fairbank Wright. Private 4344287, 4th East Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Wilfred George and Ivy May Wright, of Hornsea, Yorkshire. Died 26 October 1941 aged 21. At rest in Nicosia War Cemetery, Cyprus.

D Young. It may be the following Denis Young. Flying Officer 122905 Royal Air Force attached to 103 squadron RAF Son of Arthur and Ruth Anne Young, of Harlow Hill, Harrogate, Yorkshire. His brother Leslie also died on service. Died 14 February 1943 aged 21. At rest in Milan War Cemetery, Italy.

At rest, Octon Crematorium, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Armed Forces Memorial, Alrewas, Staffordshire.
