Note: Only the portions of the photograph disclosed on the 1st ed.
Hell's Angels dust jacket entered the public domain. There are at least two alternate versions of Thompson's self-portrait, published much later, that presumably remain under copyright. For example, the dust jacket of the 1999
Modern Library edition of
Hell's Angels used a higher-quality version of Thompson's photograh with much more detail than the 1967 version. A much larger print of the photograph, typically titled
Self-Portrait, on the Road to Tijuana, became available through fine art sellers (see
ArtNet). The larger print (27¾ in. × 27¾ in.) has more background detail and portions that are not seen on the
Hell's Angels back-cover version, which is tightly cropped around Thompson's head and has a "blank" solid-color background.
