| Description |
English: (Left) Cryogenic targets are filled with cryogenic liquid DT fluid on a roving card and moved through a tunnel underneath the laser facility. Once the cart is in place, an elevator raises it up to target chamber center. (Right) The cryogenic target sits atop a stalk inside a vacuum chamber with a shroud over the top at the end of a cryogenic cold finger. At shot time, this is mechanically removed just in time for the laser pulse. When the tiny (<5 cm) cryogenic DT ice ball is exposed to air it immediately starts to turn into a gas, so a laser pulse is needed practically immediately. |
