Text Appearing Before Image: n King Street, and a Congregationalchurch (1881) at Wardlawhill, whilst an Evangelistichall is at present in course of erection. St JohnsMasouic Hall is a poor building erected in CathcartRoad, in 1875, at a cost of £1500. Under the burghschool board are the Burgh, Farie Street, and Mae-donalds schools, which, with accommodation for respec-tively 250, 400, and 259 pupils, had, in 1884, attend-ances of 216, 442, and 280, and grants of £184, 17s.,£383, 7s., and £211, 14s. A Free Church school hasbeen closed, but there is also a Roman Catholic schoolwith accommodation for 405 pupils, and an attendanceof over 250. The Macdonald school was erectedoriginally by subscription and partly endowed with theinterest of £500 bequeathed by Lieutenant-Colonel Mac-donald for the education of Protestant children in thetown and parish of Rutherglen. Under the Educa-tional Endowments Act it is proposed to spend theinterest of this money in bursaries. Municipal matters are attended to by a provost, 2

The policeforce is united with thatof the county. Thereis a gas company withworks on the SW ofthe town. Rutherglenhas a post office, withmoney order, savingsbank, and telegraph de-partments, under Glas-gow, offices of the Com-mercial and Nationalbanks, agencies of 9insurance companies,and a newspaper, Tlielie former (L., 1875),published on Saturday.Among the miscellane-ous institutions maybe noticed a publiclibrary and readingroom, a masonic lodge(St Johns, 347), a young i other local societies. There are fairs on the first Fridayafter 11 March, the first Friday after 4 May, thefirst Tuesday after 4 June, the first Friday after 25July, the first Friday after 25 August, the Wednesdaybefore the first Friday of November, the first Fridayof November, and the Friday after 25 November.Several of these, particularly the one in May calledBeltane Fair
