James E. Smith. James E. Smith, 65, well known labor lawyer, former Assemblyman and an assistant prosecutor under former District Attorney Charles S. Whitman, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 3sa Riverside Drive, after a short illness. A graduate of Brown University, he became an Assistant District Attorney short- James E. Smith 17 aiier i n e turn of the rentory and Berved for twelve years. Surviving are his widow. Sarah C Smith, who ia a daairhter of former Congressman John Quinn, and five sons, James E. Jr, Grejrory, Robert C. W.. Eu-trene and Richard Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. Lacy A. Cohen.
