Description

King George's Sound, View from Peak Head, a 15.7 x 27cm pencil-and-wash 1801 field sketch by William Westall.

It depicts King George Sound on the south coast of Western Australia. Specifically, it is a view looking north-north-west from Peak Head, across Torndirrup and Vancouver Peninsula towards the mainland.

The shrubs in the foreground are probably

Banksia verticillata
(centre).

This field sketch was the basis for Westall's 1809–1812 oil-on-canvas painting
