Summary

Description

English: Legal status of whaling around the world. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling by a 1982 moratorium, effective from 1986. Aboriginal whaling is still allowed if it's on a subsistence basis and sustainable. Norway, Iceland and South Korea are member states of the IWC but engage in commercial whaling, which they claim to have legitimate exemptions for, which some other member states dispute. Outside the IWC, Canada and Indonesia engage in aboriginal whaling and Japan in commercial whaling.
