Lt. Charles Wilkes led a Navy surveying expedition of Puget Sound in 1841. He named many locales, including Elliott Bay, Eagle Harbor, and Maury Island. Known for his harsh discipline on board ship, he was said to be a model for Herman Melville's Captain Ahab.
