| Description |
English: The steps of a magnetized-liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) experiment. Each frame depicts the metal liner (purple) and gaseous fuel (cyan) of a MagLIF target at a different stage of the implosion. The target is about 1 cm in size. While the steps are depicted as sequential for simplicity, in reality the current and magnetic field start before the laser pulse and continue after the fuel column has reached peak compression.
Step 0 (not shown): An axial magnetic field (around 30 T) is applied to the fuel. Step 1: A laser (around 3 kJ) preheats the fuel, ionizing it. Step 2: A large current (around 30 MA) is driven through the liner. Step 3: The current induces a strong azimuthal magnetic field. Step 4: The magnetic force on the liner pushes it inward, compressing and heating the fuel to fusion-relevant densities and temperatures. The initial axial magnetic field is also amplified. Fusion reactions ensue in the fuel, releasing energy. Step 5 (not shown): The imploded liner and fuel column falls apart and disperses into the target chamber. |
