Patient of the El Kettar Civilian Hospital, Algiers, Algeria. Smallpox, or variola, was an infectious, highly contagious disease caused by a Variola virus. Due to vaccination campaigns in the 19th and 20th centuries, the World Health Organization certified its eradication in 1980.
