Overview:

This coin hoard has been discovered in two major phases; the initial part reported in 2015 with additional material added in 2017. In total the hoard represents 139 coins: pennies, cut halfpennies, farthings and additional small broken fragments. This fragmentation is due to damage through agriculture / ploughing. It is highly likely that further coins are still to be recovered from the surrounding farmland in years to come; however, it is believed that the bulk of the material is now recovered and further large accumulations of coins directly associated with this hoard is highly unlikely.

Discussion and Dating:

The coins reported below are consistent with the currency of the period during the reign of Henry III (AD 1216-1272), from the Long Cross coinage (issued 1247-1279). All but five of the coins are official English silver pennies of King Henry III. The remaining coins are contemporary Scottish pennies of King Alexander III (AD 1249-1286), which would have been struck to the same standards and would also have circulated in England at this period.

The penny was the only coin produced by the English mints at this time, with small denominations (halfpennies and farthings) produced by physically cutting the penny into halves and quarters. Typically, penny hoards of the period tend to include just a small number of cut halfpennies among the full coins, as is the case here, with 26 halfpennies (18%) present and 3 farthings (2%).

The youngest coin within the hoard dates from the period 1258-65 (Class Vg) with the Scottish coins being broadly contemporary with this (1^st Coinage Type IV). This suggests a deposition date no later than AD 1265.

Three additional coins were reported from the site - these are reported below the catalogues and are a 'Tealby' type Penny of Henry II (c. AD 1165) and two sterling pennies of Edward I (1284 & 1307). All three of these coins represent individual casual losses and are contemporary with other base metal finds recovered on site. As such they should not be considered as part of this closed hoard and are therefore outside the treasure process.

Metal Content:

The coins have not been tested for their precious metal content; however, all of the coins will consist of silver of the sterling standard , i.e. over 90% fine metal, consistent with the currency of the period and thereby fulfil the criteria set out in the Treasure Act (1996)

Statement:

It is my opinion that these coins qualify as Treasure under the 1996 Act due them being two or more precious metal coins which are more than 300 years ago and discovered together from a single dispersed deposit
