The Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) including HNLMS JAVA, HNLMS EVERSTEN and HNLMS DE RUYTER arrived in Sydney on 3 October 1930. The ships berthed at the Oceanic Steamship Company wharf and Burns Philp and Company Wharf in West Circular Quay. The Sydney Morning Herald reported on the 'unfamiliar spectacle' of the Dutch squadron arrival. On 10 October, the squadron hosted a reception on board JAVA 'as a return for the hospitality they had received while in Sydney'. The SMH reported that distinguished guests were greeted by the Dutch Consul-General Petrus Ephrem Teppema, Madame Carmen Delprat Teppema and Rear-Admiral Kayser. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
