English: This mural detail is from Wat Photaram located in Maha Sarakham, Thailand. This wat was built approximately one hundred years ago and has murals painted on all four outer walls. On the left side wall all the murals show scenes from Sang Sinxay. This particular mural detail shows Sinxay, the hero, playing chess with a naga king who has married the daughter of his Aunt Soumountha who was forcefully married to a Nyak Koumphan. In this mural detail you can also see khuts who were summoned by Sinxay to help fight the nagas after the king, who had bet his kingdom, became very angry after Sinxay won three games in a row.. |
