Summary

Description
English: Neutrophils on a Wright-Giemsa stained peripheral blood smear, containing intracellular bacteria (diplococci). Toxic changes are also evident. The presence of bacteria on the peripheral blood smear is very rare and often indicates overwhelming sepsis. The patient expired shortly after these images were taken, and blood cultures tested positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae.
