The « Diadem» and «Niobe »now took up their duty of escorting the « Ophir» across theAtlantic. As is usually the case in this region, there was ahaze on the sea, and we had to cross the tracks of icebergs aswell as fishing craft, so the precaution was taken to change ourformation. Instead of the ships of the escort steaming as before, oneon each quarter of the «Ophir,» the «Diadem » was ordered tolead the way, maintaining a distance of one mile from the royalyacht, while the «Niobe» remained on the «Ophirs» portquarter. To the « Diadem,)) therefore, was alio ted the post ofhonor, her duty being to keep a sharp lookout for dangers.That very night during the middle watch we sighted, dimlylooming through the haze, an iceberg right ahead of us.It was estimated to be one hundred feet in length andforty in height. We crossed the Banks infine weather, rolling gently on an oily swell, but on our secondday out we encountered the first of a succession of gales thatmade our homeward voyage across the Atlantic somewhat un-comfortable. We were ever tumbling about in the heavy seas,rolling to considerable angles, occasionally shipping masses ofgreen water, our decks never dry.
