Through the assistance of oneof his servants, the earl, having been dressed in livery, was conveyedto that place among the ambassadors retinue. At Dover heembarked for Calais, and reached the French coast in safety in soshort a time, that, the captain, who knew nothing of his passengers,remarked, that if they had been flying for their lives the wind couldnot have served them better. The Earl of Wintoun also escapedfrom the Tower, but as there does not seem to hive been anydesire to act upon the sentence passed against him after his trial,the escape itself may have been connived at, to rid the governmentof difficulty.
