Description

Medium blue, dark rose and beige coverlet composed of 2 panels and top and bottom have been hemmed by hand with large whip stitch; red, blue and black thread is used. In some places hem is coming out. Coverlet is very worn with several repairs, holes and frayed places.; Overshot coverlets were made on a four harness loom by housewives and professional weavers alike. Complex patterns were formed by the weaver throwing the shuttle containing the wool weft yarn over a predetermined number of linen warp threads. The pattern was drafted onto a sheet of grid paper and the weaver followed the pattern. This coverlet was once owned by William and Elizabeth Conner. It descended in the Conner family until it was donated to Conner Prairie by Conner’s great-great-granddaughter.
