Title
Post-Medieval Military Sword Guard
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy guard from the lower part of the handle of a late eighteenth century military sword. Length: 74.5mm; width: 70.6mm and 7.3mm thick. Weight: 61.36g.

The object is sub-oval and almost symmetrical in plan and has a raised border on each face. It has a central rectangular opening (17.8mm x 12.1mm) to accommodate a tang. At each side of the narrower part of the opening the upper surface of the guard has been chamfered by filing. One half of the guard is slightly smaller than the other half.

The object is in good condition and has a pale to mid-green patina overall.

This guard is similar to an incomplete example also from Yarmouth Parish, Isle of Wight. See Portable Antiquities Scheme find: IOW-479316.
