Title
Post-Medieval Military Sword Guard
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy guard from the lower part of the handle of a late eighteenth century military sword.

The object is almost symmetrical and is sub-oval in plan. It has a central rectangular opening (14.1 x 10.7mm) to accommodate a tang and a scrolled border on both faces. Within the border, on each face at either side of the tang opening, there is moulded decoration of St George holding a spear and standing over a dragon. One half of the guard is slightly smaller than the other half. The object is in good condition and has a matt khaki green patina overall.

56.6 x 55.4 x 3.8mm. Weight: 36.07g.

A similar guard, although without decoration, has been recorded from Yarmouth Parish, Isle of Wight. See, Portable Antiquities Scheme find: IOW-BEB276.
