Pvt. George L. Shaffer (CP 1191), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private George L. Shaffer, Company D, 190th Pennsylvania volunteers, who received a gunshot fracture to his head at the battle of Five Forks, Virginia on April 1st, 1865. He underwent an operation to remove some skull fragments and thereafter recovered. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Gunshot fracture of skull. Pvt. Geo. L. Shaffer Co. D. 190th Pa.” History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 24th, 1865. Ward 2, Bed 54.—Name, George L. Shaffer private Co. D. 190th Pa. Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital April 5th, 1865. He received a gunshot wound of head at the battle of Five Forks, Va., April 1st, 1865. Diagnosis:--Gunshot fracture of skull near Sagittal Suture, extending backwards three inches in the direction of longitudinal sinus. When admitted patient presented but slight evidence of compression. On the following day he complained of pains in the head. Pulse 45—pupils dilated. April 7th patient was operated upon by making a crucial incision over the seat of fracture, removing several fragments of bone with the forceps. The dura mater was found intact. After treatment consisted in keeping the patient quiet in a recumbent position, cold applications to the head and unstimulating diet. June 20th patient has entirely recovered.
