Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 46-72 cm; Weight: 4.5-6.5 kg; Identification: The red howler monkey has orange-brown fur and a prehensile tail with a naked underside at the tip. The male monkeys have beards; Habitat: Forests, mangroves; Diet: Herbivore: leaves, fruit; Reproduction: Breeding takes place all year. Females gestate for 20 weeks and then give birth to a single offspring. Weaning occurs between 18 months and two years; Social Structure: A single male leads a troop of 6-8 members; Behavior: Males give very loud calls that can be heard three kilometers away. This species is largely arboreal; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The males have an expanded hyoid bone that goes around the larynx, creating a resonating chamber. This is how they can make such loud cries. |
