Summary

Description
English: Relief slab (inv. no. 215), depicting Apollo, a Scythian, and Marsyas. What follows is the text of the museum inscription about all three slabsː "Three relief slabs from the revetment of a pedestal. Marble. Found at Mantineia, Arkadia. Together with a fourth slab, now lost, they formed the revetment of a pedestal for the statues of the Delian trinity (Leto, Apollo and Artemis), or of an altar. On slab inventory number 215 is depicted the music contest between Apollo and Marsyas. Apollo sits on a rock holding a kithara. At the right, Marsyas plays the flute. Between them stands the Scythian who will punish the insolent Marsyas, after his defeat, with a horrible death. On each of the other two slabs (inventory numbers: 216, 217) are depicted three of the nine Muses holding musical instruments and scrolls. The reliefs are distinctly Praxitelean in style and were probably carved by one of the great sculptor’s pupils. About 330-320 B.C. Accessory numbers 215, 216, 217."
