Title
Romano-British statuette
Description
English: Romano-British Cast copper alloy statuette of a youthful dancing figure, probably a young Satyr. Of excellent (probably Italian) workmanship, the figure is leaping forward with the right leg slightly raised. The left arm is extended outwards and would presumably have originally held an object aloft. This arm is broken off just above the elbow, the right is missing from a little below the elbow whilst the right foot is missing from just above the ankle. The left foot is nearly complete but the lower part is lost; it is likely that this foot and the right would have been joined to a base, now lost. The modelling of the figure is excellent, conveying an impression of fluidity and movement reminiscent of the best-quality Roman bronzes. There are no traces of any moulding lines.
The figure’s hair is gathered below the crown into a diadem-like wreath which may be intended to represent some sort of garland; otherwise he is naked but for a scanty nebris (fawn skin) folded and draped over the right shoulder. This runs diagonally across the middle part of the torso, the hairs of the outer side of the pelt where they would be visible conveyed by deeply incised curling lines.
Max. length/height approx. 97mm, max. width approx. 51mm. Weight 140.00g
