Description

Memo written by Sir Walter Nash (New Zealands Prime Minister at the time) to Peter Snell on 3 September 1960, congratulating Snell on his success at the Rome Olympics, where he won the gold medal and set a new national record for the 800m. The photo is of Snell winning and breaking the world record for the 800m at the AGFA Athletic meeting, Lancaster Park, Christchurch, February 1962 and is from Archives New Zealand's National Publicity Studios Collection.

Sir Peter Snell was born 17 December 1938 in Opunake, Taranaki, New Zealand. Snell had a short career considering he was one of the worlds most famous international sportsmen, yet he achieved so much that he was voted New Zealand’s "Sports Champion of the (20th) Century" and was one of 24 inaugural members of the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall Of Fame named in 2012. Snell was a protege of the great New Zealand athletics coach Arthur Lydiard. Snell is known for the three Olympic and two Commonwealth Games gold medals he won, and the several world records he set.
