Summary

Description
English: The winter of 2018-2019 started fiercely and early in Northern India, with a heavy snowstorm hitting Jammu and Kashmir from November 2 – 4. According to media reports, at least 700 people were evacuated from Jawhar Tunnel and Sonmarg due to snowfall on November 4 and over 1,000 civilians were provided shelter in Banihal while Kashmir Valley was cut off from the rest of the country for at least two days after the Srinager-Jammu national highway was closed due to snow and ice. Widespread power outages were also reported. Snow typically falls in the state of Jammu and Kashmir beginning in mid-December and lasting through February. On December 17, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of snow across Jammu and Kashmir. The southwestern slopes of the Himalaya Mountains and the plains south of the mountains remain snow-free while heavy snow lays over the north-eastern slopes of the Himalayas as well on the highest elevations on the Tibetan plateau.
